I am interested in driving a commercial vehicle. Do I need a special license?
You must obtain a commercial driver's license before you can legally drive a commercial vehicle not only in North Carolina but the rest of the United States.

Am I required to take a road test to obtain a CDL?
Yes, you must take and successfully pass a road test in order to obtain your CDL.

Am I required to take the road test only, or are there other tests I must pass to obtain my commercial driver's license?
You must also pass a written test, a drug screening, and a pre-trip inspection.

Is there anywhere in the state of North Carolina where I can learn how to drive a tractor trailer?

Are there any differences between North Carolina truck driving schools and truck driving schools in other states?
Each state has a different commercial driver's license exam.  By attending a school in North Carolina, you will receive the training and instruction you need to obtain a North Carolina CDL.

Is truck driving school like other schools, where it takes several months (or even years) to graduate?
Truck driving school is short when compared to the training that is required by other professions. Most North Carolina truck driving schools last from three to five weeks.  An accredited truck driving school should consist of both classroom and driving training.

Does the state provide a vehicle to take the road test in?
No, you must provide your own vehicle. Often, the school you graduated from can provide or rent you a vehicle to use for the test.

Is a CDL all I need to drive a tanker truck?
You must have a CDL to drive a tanker truck, but you must also have a tank endorsement. If the tank you are hauling has hazardous material, you must also have a hazardous materials endorsement.

Are there any special qualifications to receive my hazardous materials endorsement?
Yes, you must first apply to receive your hazardous materials endorsement. As you apply, you will fill out a simple form that asks for basic information. The state will use that information to perform a criminal background check. The hazardous materials endorsement is the only endorsement that requires, by law, that you obtain a background check.

How long do you have to have your CDL before you can qualify for endorsements?
While there is no time restriction, you must pass a written exam before you receive an endorsement for hazardous materials, double/triple trailer, tanker, air brakes, and other endorsements.
